Medieval Fiction

For lover's of medieval fiction

Hello, all...
As an amateur historian and writer-waiting-for-publication, I'm ready to submit my medieval novel, which is set in 13th century England. I've decided to begin the process by selectively choosing contests that have, as the finalist editor or agent, someone who might be interested in my type of book.
Has anyone else tried this route? I find it beneficial in many ways:
1. It gets my book "out the door" pretty quickly.
2. It forces me to create and polish a short synopsis, which many pubs and agents ask for.
3. It also forces me to polish those all-important first three chapters, as the submission requirement of most contests is somewhere between 20-55 pages.
4. In the meantime, I'm honing a query letter for submittal directly to agents I will choose.

I have no desire to go with electronic publishing. So for me, this route seems helpful. And I must say, I do know of other writers who became published authors after finaling in contests.

What does anyone else think? :)

Congrats on finishing your manuscript, Carolyn. Best of luck, both with contests as well as pubs!

Best wishes,

Thanks, Stephanie!
I'm finding the prospect of composing the query letter to be incredibly boring, as I really can't believe anyone buys anything off a query letter, anyway. But heck...ya gotta do what ya gotta do, I guess! I'll get down to it soon... In the meantime, I entered three contests and now I'm trying to begin work on a paranormal/suspense story (called "Gothic" in the old days, haha). It's more Anne Rice than Daphne Du Maurier, or perhaps a blend of both...kinda. :)

Are you a writer, Stephanie? If so, what're you working on?

Hi Carolyn,

Paranormal/suspense sounds intriguing. I loved reading du Maurier though Rice isn't my cuppa tea. :-) Have fun writing!

I call myself a hobby writer, as I only really spend weekend time at it. I'm still working on a medieval project I started 4 years ago, plus I recently began work on a Scottish 18th C adventure romance which I focus on at the moment.

How long were you working on your completed manuscript? Yes, I can see how 'selling' your work in a letter can be tricky. I guess all these pieces - letter, synopsis, 20000 words - have to work together to make the right impression.

Fingers crossed for your contests!
